NELSON GRANITE COLUMBARIUMS
WHAT IS A COLUMBARIUM?
Columbariums are granite structures with individual compartments to hold cremated remains. They vary in sizes, shapes and colours and serve
a growing need in every cemetery as cremation rates continue to climb. Each niche is designed to hold two urns so not only does it offer above
ground interment options for those who are cremated, it is also designed to save a great deal of space for cemeteries that are starting to fill up.
WHY SHOULD THE CEMETERY ADMINISTRATION GET INVOLVED?
Nelson Granite started in 1909 as a headstone manufacturer and in the past decade, we have noticed a real shift towards cremation;
upwards of 70-80% in Canada and 60-70% in the US. We knew we also needed to make the shift to cremation products to remain
competitive. Many of our traditional customers, however, were very hesitant to make that move and have not embraced the
columbarium as an option for above ground interment.
As a company, we changed direction and approached cemeteries directly to get columbariums on the market and meet consumer
demands. Along the way, we realized how beneficial the direct sale of the columbarium would be for the cemetery.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PURCHASING A COLUMBARIUM DIRECT?
1. With cremation rates climbing, cemeteries that don’t have above ground interment options
risk having customers keep their loved ones at home or placed in another cemetery. A
columbarium will make that option available as well as help preserve the history of the
community through their cemetery records.
2. If your cemetery is running out of room for traditional burial, columbariums are a great
way to save space. As an example, a 48 niche columbarium, which can hold up to 96
urns, makes up the same size footprint as one plot.
3. Purchasing a columbarium direct from the supplier and administering it directly can
generate a great return on investment to help make your cemetery financially self-
sufficient. It will not only help with the maintenance costs of running a cemetery
but it will also help invest in the perpetual care fund.
4. The final point is the return on investment will ensure the cemetery has the
Nelson Granite resources to purchase future columbariums as needed without having to
sacrifice in other areas to raise the money. The first columbarium will pay
PO Box 178 for the next one when the time comes.
