Everything You Need to Know About Columbarium Niches
Simply put, a columbarium niche is receptacle or single compartment within a columbarium that is specifically constructed to hold cremation urns (cremated remains).
The dramatic increase in cremation rates in North America, and the desire to find a special place for laying loved ones to rest has seen an increase in demand for columbarium niches.
Columbariums and thus columbarium niches are above ground and the processes is often referred to as above ground interment. Each columbarium can have only few niches up to 84 or more.
The niche size can vary with smaller cubed niches measuring 9 x 9 x 9 and custom columbariums with niche sizes of 12 ½ x 12 ½ x 14. Obviously, the size of the niche will dictate the size of the cremation urn to be placed within it.
The columbarium is located at cemeteries, funeral homes and some churches and provide a physical location where family and friends can visit and pay respects.
